Mikuyu School, Mikuyu
Mikuyu is a small village 10kms from the nearest tar road and 20 km from the nearest town (Kasungu).
The Secondary school consisted of a small derelict office and 2 unsafe classrooms. The School had 4 teachers and no access to water or electricity. At a basic level the school had insufficient desks, chairs, books and stationary. To add to its challenges in the rainy season the access road to the school became impassable for 4 weeks of the year.
In just 4 years, we are amazed at the improvements that have been made possible through our donors and partners.
Mikuyu shows there is a real model for sustainable change. We think that working with local people, taking time to ensure projects are properly completed before starting new work, and having a trusted partner in situ has made this work possible.
In addition we have seen the power of community development (beyond the school.)
In Mikuyu a health clinic has been established and is operated 5 days a week. A road bridge has been constructed to enable the area to be accessible 365 days a year. The availability of bikes also has had a significant impact to the logistics of families in the area.
These are all profound secondary benefits of our work that will open up the community to new economic horizons.
